Arkansas Optometrists: Laser Procedures Victory

Last week a new law went into affect in Arkansas that would allow different optometrists to perform surgical procedures like lid lesion removal in their office of practice. This would make Arkansas the fourth state in the U.S to permits these procedures following Oklahoma, Alaska, and Kentucky.

The bill also asks for the Board of Optometrists to create rules and regulations for establishing credentials and prerequisites for performing these laser procedures and will require continued education for the Optometrists. However, this law does not permit doctors to perform cataract surgery or prescribe medication. The president of the Board of Optometric Association for Arkansas considered this a big one, stating “The most exciting aspect is that families across the state will have much greater access to comprehensive eye health and vision care,” with doctors performing to the full extent of our training.
