Protect Eyes: Understanding Summer Sun Risks

The summertime is a great time for friends and family to get out in the sunshine. And when you are from Michigan, well, you soak up as much of it as you can. But remember that your eyes need to stay protected from the suns harmful rays. Consider these different ways the ultraviolet rays can affect your eyesight during these summer months.

Suns Reflection Off Of The Water

During the summer you may find yourself cooling off in the pool or swimming in the lake. But remember, extensive time in the water can actually cause damage to your eyes. The sunlight reflecting off of the water can cause a painful sunburn to the front part of the eye called the photokeratitis. This can later cause blurry vision and in extreme cases, temporary vision loss.

Long Term Exposure Throughout The Day

Spending days at the summer home is all fun, but long term sun exposure to the eye throughout the day can cause damage in the long run. This can potentially increase your risk for eye disease, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Wearing UV blocking sunglasses throughout the day can help decrease your risk.

It’s Not Just The Summer

The summertime isn’t the only season where your eye safety is at risk. Winter can be an extremely dangerous time for your eyes as well. When the sun is reflecting off of the snow it can reflect into your eye similar to the water.

None of these items are meant to detour you from having fun this summer, but just to make you aware of the possible dangers to your eyes. Use your best judgement and if your eyes feel strained, throw on a pair of UV blocking sunglasses.
